Every since I was a kid, I had my sights set on the stars.
And with a little bit of luck and a lot of hard work, I managed to reach my dream and see those stars up close during my travels into space as a mission specialist with NASA’s Astronaut Corps.
Every kid should get to experience the excitement of seeing the stars a little bit closer.
I currently work as Assistant Director of Space and Aviation Security in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. The President has host two Astronomy Night's on the South Lawn of the White House.
We invited students, educators, engineers, scientists, and visionaries from the space industry to stargaze with us, using 18 telescopes to observe celestial objects, including the Moon, Neptune, the Andromeda Galaxy, and Albireo (a binary star system). Together, we can ensure that you and people in every corner of our nation enjoys our universe.
Finding The Cure.
The world of medicine revolves around one central goal – CURE. What differs is the mode of treatment. The mode of treatment may be guided by several factors – the success rate of a particular treatment, the duration of treatment, its availability and recommendations of relatives and friends. In the race, Allopathic system of medicine stands first with its efficient acute management and Homeopathy stands first in treating chronic complaints without any adverse effects. Each one has its own efficacy, advantages, disadvantages and limitations. Allopathy concentrates on the disease, its symptoms and definite laboratory reports. It labels the disease and treats the symptoms. The treatment for a particular symptom is usually the same for all individuals. Allopaths usually stops treatment once the symptoms go off or if they have found normal lab reports. On the other hand homeopathy concentrates on the individual, despises laboratory investigations and does not label the disease. It individualizes the treatment and aims at a wholesome cure of the person, aiming not only at the cure of the disease but at a healthy and productive life – the price one pays for this is time. Homeopathic treatment will be continued till the patient attains comfort and well-being sensation and hence it usually takes longer but claims to bring complete cure and sometimes also guarantees no relapse. Allopaths often refer to homeopathy as a 'pseudo-science' or 'placebo medicine' based on the infinite dilutions of substances that homeopaths use as medicines. While homeopaths refer to allopaths as crude and insensitive people who would not think twice before chopping off a limb. Here one needs to be aware that surgery has its own advantages – especially in serious conditions, irrevocable structural changes and in congenital malformations. Homeopaths blame allopaths for suppressing the symptoms and hold pride in the fact that they address the problem to the core to reach the cure. But then again, how many of us would choose to cough all day or stay in bed because of a severe back ache. Don't we need cough suppressants and pain killers? Allopaths question the potency and even existence of the medicines that homeopaths use but why do they forget that homeopathic medicines are used in minimal doses and have little or no side-effects, drug interactions or drug resistance which is a common problem with allopathic medicines. In a world blinded by commercial setups, allopathy definitely wins the race while homeopathy stands first when principles and human feelings are concerned. The debate is never ending and needless to say that one cannot be declared better than the other. The choice is, after all, yours to make! By: Esha Gupta
A growing number of people across the Nation are foregoing traditional medical treatments for alternative methods. Or they are combining traditional methods with alternative methods. Herbal medicine is among a host of methods that make u...p what is termed “complementary and alternative medicine,” or CAM. Such methods can include diet, homeopathy, acupuncture, acupressure, meditation, reflexology, iridology, chiropractic care, healing touch, quantum touch, and massage among others. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicines, or NCCAM, defines CAM as a group of diverse medical and health care systems, practices and products that are not generally considered part of conventional medicine practiced by doctors and allied health professionals, such as physical therapist, psychologists and registered nurses. Dr. Deepak Chopra who writes for the American Medical Association stated that “The relationship between conventional and alternative medicine is like a bad marriage, only in reverse. It began with a divorce and has moved to the stage of wary mediation.” Many alternative treatments have become the norm for patients who are using chemo-therapy to fight for their life. Many major insurance companies pay for alternative treatments to combat pain, and auto-immune illnesses. While many physicians warn of the untested nature of some alternative treatments, some methods like acupuncture and chiropractic care have gained national acceptance. According to the American Chiropractic Association, chiropractic care is used most often to treat neuromuscular-skeletal complaints, including neck pain, back pain, knee pain, joint pain, and headaches. The way we view chiropractic care has changed during the last few decades. Chiropractors, are getting referrals from medical doctors, as a result insurance companies include chiropractic care in their coverage. Gaining acceptance is Tai Chi, Yoga, Liu Tong and Qi-Gong. One of the advantages that many alternative methods offer is fewer side effects than traditional methods. The laws have changed for those seeking and those providing alternative methods of coping with pain. Tapping is gaining acceptance, it involves lightly pushing on points of the body, while using visualization and verbal techniques to eliminate both physical and emotional issues like pain, obesity and phobias. When choosing alternative health providers, ask questions and remember to tell your healthcare provider you are using alternative and traditional methods to cure your body. HHM
